Requests/Re-Ups

Well, I recently had a request to re-post a Lewis Furey track that I initially posted quite some time ago. I haven't posted any songs in quite some time, so all of the initial links are likely dead at this point. The Lewis Furey track is now available again, in the original post (see the list of post labels along the right column of the blog and scroll down to Lewis Furey if you're interested). I'm just posting this note to let you all know to not be shy and feel free to ask for any of the tracks I have previously posted to be re-upped. It might take me a while for me to get around to it, but I will do my best to respond to any requests that are made.

Also, I will be glad to take requests for additional songs to be uploaded if I have them and they are not readily available. If I don't have the song, maybe another listener and blog follower might. It would be cool if we could use this blog as a forum to share some of the hard to find tracks that David plays!

Well, if you happened to watch the comments sections to some of my recent posts, you'll know that I just figured out a track after David played it last night and back announced it as by Rymes With Orange. I was able to find a copy today - old school - at the used CD store (it seems pretty scarce on-line). First, a little about the band - the primary members were: Lyndon Johnson - Vocals; Rob Lulic - Guitars and Bob D'Eith - Keyboards. I believe they were from the Vancouver area. They released at least a couple of albums in the early 90s: 'Peel' in 1992 and 'Trapped in the Machine' in 1994. I believe they had at least one other release, but I don't know anything about that one. As far as I can tell, over the last 15 or so years they have faded into relative obscurity as they don't seem to show up too much in a web search and aren't available for on-line purchase anywhere I looked.

The first track I'll feature is 'Home House Flower' which is the track David played last night and is from their 'Peel' album.

Next is another Rymes With Orange track that David also plays from time to time. This one is from their 'Trapped in the Machine' release and it's called 'Toy Train' - I'm guessing that this was their biggest hit, it's a pretty good track!

Next up is a track from a band called 'Odds'. They were another one that I was able to find on my trip to the used CD store, but that was also eluding me in my searches of the web. This is another band that I believe was from the Vancouver area. Again, a bit about the band from the CD: the members were - Craig Northey - Vocals & Guitar; Doug Elliot - Bass & Vocals; Steven drake - Vocals, Gutiar, Piano & Organ and Paul Brennan - Drums & Piano. The track I'll feature is Heterosexual Man.

Well, it's about time I got around to featuring SLAVE to the SQUAREwave! Watch this blog for the next few weeks for much more on this great band that was voted 'Best New Band of 2005' by David! If you listen to David's show, you should be well aware that the Slaves are playing a show at the Diesel Playhouse in Toronto on Sunday, June 15, 2008. It should be a great show as the band is just back from a mini-tour with dates in Montreal and Ottawa. I've seen them a few times myself and plan to be at this one as they always put on a great show. Also, for more info on the band you should head over to their website and myspace pages.



Over the past week or so, I've struck up an e-mail conversation with Rob from the band, initially to get the OK to do a post on them and then for more and more information - many thanks go to Rob for giving me the OK to go ahead with my posts and patiently responding to my many questions and requests!

The next track I'll feature is by Julian Cope - Sunspots. I have to say Julian is a favourite artist of mine - I hadn't really heard much, if any, of Julian or The Teardrop Explodes before a friend with an extra ticket to his 1995 show at Lee's Palace in Toronto and asked me to go. Luckily, I agreed to go even though I didn't really know who he was at the time. Long story short - it was an amazing show and turned me into a big Cope fan. If you are looking for any Cope or Cope-related releases - do yourself a huge favour and go have a look at the following blog. I discovered that amazing blog a month or so ago and I'm still working through all the Cope releases available there, plus a host of other amzaing music is posted as well!

Finally, I'm posting a great track by Fiction Factory, a band that I think just about everybody thinks was a only a one-hit wonder for their 80's hit '(Feels Like) Heaven' However, that's not what David played or the track I'm going to post - instead he played another great track fron their 'Throw The Warped Wheel Out' album (which is availalbe for download at this blog) but instead I'm posting the 12" version of Ghost of Love which was the single release after (Feels Like) Heaven.

If you can't tell by now, I don't quite agree with the common perception that Fiction Factory was a one-hit wonder. Back in the 80's I had both 'Throw The Warped Wheel Out' and their follow-up album which was called 'Another Story' on vinyl, both of which got fairly regular play on my turntable and in my opinion were both pretty solid albums. Another Story has never been released on CD and seems to be pretty hard to come by in web searches I've done, so as a bonus, here's a vinyl rip of that full album for download!

Here's a few from Thursday's show - first a track from the great Canadian band Klaatu with Little Neutrino from their debut album 3:47 E.S.T. Does anyone not know about the whole Beatles rumour story and that their name came from the 50's sci-fi movie 'The Day The Earth Stood Still'? Leave me a comment if you're interested in some more on that story (or do your own web search!)

I found Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs album posted at this blog. The Blues Town blog is well worth some additional searching as there is a bunch of great blues that gets posted there. Actually, I also found an Elliot Murphy album that contains the great track 'Everything I Do (Leads Me Back To You)' track which also features vocals by Bruce Springsteen. David spins that track semi-regularly as well - I've been looking for that track for quite a while and it was just posted there yesterday!

A bunch of tracks to feature tonight, what a great show!

I'll start off with a great one by Long John Baldry called Flying. I was actually disappointed not to find this one on iTunes - I really thought it would be there as I was able to pick up a copy of the great album that this track is from (It Ain't Easy) back when it was re-released on CD back in 2005 - shortly after Long John's unfortunate death. I still remember David's show where he did a great tribute to Long John at that time. What can I say about Long John and this great album? I guess I'll just re-tell a story that I'm pretty sure I've heard David tell. Long John was at least part of the reason that the U-Know Awards (which eventually became the Casby's) were created - when Long John was nominated in the 80's as best 'New Artist' by the Juno Awards, that showed just how far out of touch with music those awards were and David decided that there should be an alternative. The nomination in that category completely ignored the incredible legacy that Long John had already established in his long career to that point!

If you enjoy the track I've posted, please go to Long John's website and order a copy of the CD - you won't be disapponted. My favourite selection on that album is actually a combination of the first two tracks - a spoken word opener: 'Conditional Discharge' and the amazing 'Don't Try To Lay No Boogie Woogie On The King Of Rock'N'Roll'. Fortunately, both those tracks are available on iTunes (the Canadian store anyways) on a release titled 'Rhino Hi-Five - Long John Baldry EP'. That selection is VERY high up on my all-time favourite tracks!

Next up is a great track by Thunderclap Newman - Accidents. If you've never heard of Thunderclap Newman - you still might still have heard their great track 'Something In The Air' - that was a reasonably big hit in when it was released in 1969 and was featured in the movie 'Almost Famous' in 2000.

Another great song - Grand Hotel by Procol Harum.

This is another great track - 1849 by Lighthouse. There's a recent band also called Lighthouse that I know nothing about. This track is from a Canadian band from the early 70's that featured Skip Prokop who was once a CFNY DJ! Skip has a website that sells CD's but unfortunately not any Lighthouse CD's that I could find.

Next up is Be Bop Deluxe with the track 'Japan'. I originally thought that this was on their 1978 album 'Drastic Plastic', but it may have been just released as a single in 1977. That's what's great about David's show - he preserves obsure tracks like this that everyone else has forgotten about (or never noticed in the first place!)
