Here's another 70's Can Con rarity. It's featured in the March 23, 2006 playlist and it's 'Cops Ballet/Rubber Gun Show/Top Ten Sexes' by Lewis Furey from his album 'The Humours of Lewis Furey'

I also recently found Furey's first album at the following blog (it's about halfway down in the comments to this post): Lewis Furey - S/T

I also found this webpage with lots of information (including lyrics): Lewis Furey Fan Site as well as what appears to be an official website at: Lewis Furey Official Website

Here's a more recent track from the March 24, 2006 playlist. It's 'Ballad for Dead Friends' by the Dashboard Prophets. I don't know much about this band, other than this track was relased in the mid-90's. The track is available for download for free from the band's own website (along with many of their other songs) at: http://www.dashboardprophets.com/ under 'Audio/Video Downloads'.

Here's an 80's obscure classic from the March 25, 2004 playlist that features vocals by none other than Sting. For the Police/Sting completists out there, it's required listening. The track is Why Don't You Answer? by Eberhard Schoener. It features one side of a telephone conversation. I have a version I recorded from one of David's early shows where David provides us with what might be going on on the other end of the phone. At some point I have to get around to digitizing that and posting it here, I remember having a good laugh at the time!

This posting was included in the March 26, 2004 playlist. It's a fairly obscure Can Con 70's classic by Mashmakhan (don't make me try to pronounce that!) called As Years Go By. I had this track from one of the 'Oh What A Feeling' compilations (Canadian music compilations somehow related to the Juno Awards). I also recently found two albums by the band on this blog: Redtelephone66

June 26, 2003

Well, this was the first playlist I ever made, I believe it was the third week David was on the air at 94.9. It's not very complete and I only listened for around 40 minutes or so (mainly because I was just writing down what I could while I was heading down the 401 and eventually out of range of the station!) but this was one of the first tastes I had, and sometime between June 26th and the next week (July 3) I decided that this was something very much worth remembering and that I would do what I could to tape the shows. Anyways, here goes:

Bob Marley - One Love
Carole Pope/Rough Trade - ??
Coldplay - The Scientist
Grateful Dead - ??
Ian Dury & The Blockheads - Wake Up & Make Love With Me
Madness - Our House
Rough Trade - Birds of a Feather
T.Rex - ??
Talking Heads - Hey Now

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

Featured Artists

Here are some featured tracks from the Feb 28 & 29, 2008 shows:

First up is another Can Con song, from the generally under-appreciated Breeding Ground. They had a few reasonably solid releases in the mid-80's but didn't seem to get much recognition. I picked up a CD 'greatest hits' release from them in the mid to late 90's but as far as I can tell none of their music is currently in print.

Breeding Ground - Happy Now I Know

Breeding Ground - Tales Of Adventure

Second, is a great parody of the Talking Head's great track 'Psycho Killer' by the Fools called Psycho Chicken - if you haven't heard this one before, you'll hesistate the next time you think about heading to KFC!

The Fools - Psycho Chicken

The Fools - Psycho Chicken

Next, is another reasonably obscure Can Con band Vis A Vis - with a great track called Shadowplay. I wasn't able to locate cover art for this one doing a quick web search, if anyone has a scan of this release or any others, if you could post it in the comments that would be great! This is yet another band that has a 'pre-internet' band name - one that is difficult to search for on the web - can you imagine anyone naming their band 'The The' nowadays? (Matt Johnson is one of my all-time favourite artists, by the way!)

Vis A Vis - Shadowplay

The last track I'll post for today is by the Fabulous Poodles. I don't know much about these guys, this is a funny track, but not their best work (in my opinion) - David does play a few tracks by them, so I'm sure I'll have an opportunity to post some other tracks from this band in the future. The album this track is from was titled 'Mirror Stars' in some places and 'Unsuitable' in others - not sure why that was or where it was released under which name.

Fabulous Poodles - Tit Photographer's Blues

The Fabulous Poodles - Unsuitable

One last item - David played Jackie Shane's version of 'Any Other Way' - I have versions of that track by William Bell (the original, I believe) and a recent cover by Danny Marks. I wasn't able to locate that track in a web search - does anyone have an mp3 of that track they can post?

Here's a link to a video someone made of Jackie Shane's version:

Deep Thoughts

That last post got me thinking about how many songs David plays that are about the Radio and/or have Radio in their title. Please post suggestions of other 'Radio' related tracks in the comments! One of my favourites on that theme is:

Marillion - Angelina

Marillion - Marbles

Back to a couple Can Con items for this post on songs David payed on March 13, 2008. The first band, I have a number of tracks by, but not this one - anyone else have this track that they can post?

The Box - Live on TV

The Box - The Box

The second track I'll feature is by a band called Copyright. Their first album just showed their name as the letter 'C' in a circle (the symbol for a copyrighted item). Somewhere along the line I read that they were stopped from using that as their band name for subsequent releases, because, you guessed it - that symbol is copyrighted! Not sure if that's just a joke or not, but it gave me a chuckle so I thought I'd pass it along! Maybe the anti-lawyer can weigh in on this issue!

Copyright - Radio

Copyright - Love Story

Featured Artists

Here's a couple of relatively obscure and out-of-print tracks that David played on March 14, 2008. Both of these are great tracks. When I did a search to see if either of these tracks were readily available, I found a copy of the Seven Days in Sammystown CD for almost $500 on amazon.com! Far Side of Crazy is a great track, but that's over the top! The full Wall of Voodoo album can be found on the following blog:

Questions & Answers

Over the years there have been a number of question and answer songs where one band responds in song to another band's musical question. Anyone have suggestions of a pair of songs that fit this? I seem to recall reading that there was an answer song to Lloyd Cole & the Commotions' - Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?. Here's a funny one that I thought of, even though it doesn't truly fit the pattern:

Josie Cotton - Johnny, are You Queer?

Josie Cotton - Johnny Are You Queer? / (Let's Do) The Blackout

Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers - I'm Straight

The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers

Featured Artists

Here are a couple of Can Con gems where the band names both happen to also be movie titles! As far as I can tell are both out of print:

Eight Seconds - Kiss You When It's Dangerous

Eight Seconds - Kiss You (When It's Dangerous) / Land Of The Monster

National Velvet - Sex Gorilla NEW LINK

National Velvet - Courage

Eight Seconds & National Velvet in Zip file

'B-Movie' Set

Closing out Friday night's show David played his 'B-Movie' set with tracks all about the movies. Those songs all fit together so well, it's definitely a favourite of mine. I have a playlist on my ipod with all those songs included. I added a couple tracks to that playlist on my own, neither of which really fit in very well with the vibe of David's selections:

B-Movie - Nowhere Girl

B-Movie - Nowhere Girl (Version / Short Version) / Remembrance Day

Bollock Brothers - Horror Movies

The Bollock Brothers - Horror Movies / Enchantment

Anyone have any suggestions for other tracks that would be worthwhile additions to that playlist?

First Post

Well, for my first post I thought I'd pass along how I came to start this blog. My first exposure to David Marsden came in the early 80's when I discovered CFNY and the abundance of great music that could be found there and seemingly nowhere else. In the beginning, a reasonably small group of listeners developed a strong bond to the station, listening whenever they could and in return got exposed to music that couldn't be heard anywhere else and a real voice in what was being played. From there it mushroomed into one of the top stations in the Toronto market as more and more fans came along. I'll leave the rest of that story to http://www.spiritofradio.ca/, which is where I first heard the news that David Marsden was going to be back on the Toronto airwaves, I believe that station was re-christened '94.9 The Rock' and its first day on air was June 12, 2003, which included David's first show since it was a Thursday. I started listening very near the beginning and in no time I was hooked!
